August 2009 meeting

Toy play is educational!

Making training fun can be challenging. Add in some Jolly Balls and Kong Wubbas, and the pups discover that play is not only fun, it's something they can learn from!

Astro with a Kong Wubba

Astro tries out the Kong Wubba.

Valla lays with three Jolly Balls

Valla wants all of the Jolly Balls.

Rosie stands

Rosie watches the other dogs.

Nani lies down

Nani shows how well she can "rest" when told to "down."

Orson lies next to a Jolly Ball

Orson watches attentively but doesn't move.

Astro has a Kong Wubba

Notice how Astro's leash is nice and loose while he remains "down."

Valla holds her Jolly Ball

Valla will fetch the Jolly Ball until she drops!

Rosie comes when called

Rosie comes when called, loose leash and all.

Nani wears a huge smile

Look at that smile! Nani is a happy girl.

Handsome Orson sits

What a beautiful dog Orson is!

Toy play teaches dogs self control: having to stop
playing or allowing their handler to take the toys is
not easy. Toys can be a reward for a job well done.
We're supposed to teach our puppies how to fetch;
Jolly Balls and Kong Wubbas are great for that.

We were able to end our meeting with off-leash play in a safe fenced area.
Even that was part of training. We know our dogs understand the "come"
command when they return to us instead of continuing to romp with the
other dogs!
