August 2007 Activities

August 2nd, 2007 Meeting

We focused on distractions with the pups, seeing who could "sit" and "rest" without giving into the temptation to investigate what they saw and heard.

Between remote cars and bubbles ...

Hilo is ready to go swimming in her bowl         Valor wants to know why there are biscuits
                                         in his water bowl ...

Jamaica prefers to lap daintily at her water        Nigel has no issues with water -- he'd
                                         rather step in his bowl!

Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Home - August

Since many of the residence of Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Home would not be able to go to the West End Fair, the staff decided to put on their own mini-fair.  We spent an hour or so mingling with the people and answering questions about The Seeing Eye puppy raising program.

Pocono Playhouse - August 12th, 2007

We enjoyed watching "The Sound of Music."  The biggest compliment received was by those who had not realized that there were any dogs in the theater!

West End Fair - August 26th, 2007

Although dogs are not normally welcome, all of our members could have entered the fairgrounds with their Seeing Eye trainees this day.  Since it was a 4-H function, only our 4-H members were allowed to participate in the actual dog show.  It was a great opportunity to expose the pups to the crowds, noises, and excitement of a county fair.  A huge thank you to Diane Appel of the Pike County Paw Partners for coming down to judge our show!

The judge examines the dogs.  The pups are supposed to main a "sit" and "rest" while having their ears, mouths, feet, and the rest of their body handled by a stranger.  The judge critiques not only the behavior of the dog, but the condition they are in.  Ears should be clean, nails short, and coat in good shape.

The handlers walk the dogs around the ring.  The dogs should be calm and mannerly, keeping a matched stride with the 4-H member.  The judge observes and grades how well the dog responds to the handler.

The dogs are supposed to "sit" and "rest" while the handler steps away.  The pup has to main the "rest" for a full minute.
